If somebody told me a year ago that I would be spending the New Year eve of 2010 in a small town in Africa, I would definitely have called that the craziest thing I ever heard. Well, it turned out that I am the crazy one who spent his New Year eve in Thohoyandou (means the “elephant head” in Venda) instead of Time Square or Victory Park in Dallas. Last night, we went to the house of Jeff’s aunt in the other side of town to celebrate the New Year. We BBQ and danced the whole night and I also watched part of Texas Bowl game on ESPN (my first football game since moving to Africa). Just like the way Chinese people celebrated their Mid-Autumn Festival, South Africans celebrate the New Year with small fireworks and fire crackers. Jeff bought a ton of fireworks and his cousins and brothers went nuts lighting up those fireworks for 30 minutes after the clock stroke midnight. The rest of town also lit up the night sky with their fireworks while shouting “HAPPY HAPPY HAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPY”. Happy 2010, ladies and gentlemen. May this be the best year ever in your lives.
